We may see ourselves as weary wanderers who long for the divine in an arid and uncertain land, yet we rarely imagine God as a weary wanderer longing for communion.
I believe Jesus’s love will be reproduced in His people when they start treating others as if they were Jesus.
I have often wondered what exactly was nailed to the cross. As a carpenter, I believe it’s important to determine what was nailed and how. Many think that God’s laws were nailed to the cross, yet I can’t accept the idea that God’s law of love was ever against us.
God’s love delights in creativity and improvisation. Might this perspective help us engage with our modern culture? Veering from God’s singular path to bless the world is fraught with danger, not only for the cynical secularist but also for those of us resistant to change who believe in keeping God in a neat, static package.
In the words of Abraham Joshua Heschel, “God is pursuing man” (God in Search of Man, p.136). God loves us enough to reach out to us and wrestle with us. We are sought and pursued by God all our lives; He grapples with us, urging and gently pushing us beyond our comfort zones.
Though we find ourselves in a world far from perfect, the lessons of the garments of the high priest offer a glimpse of the glory and beauty in which God intends to clothe humanity. While these fine and costly materials fall far short of the glory and beauty that is coming, when we understand the significance of these special garments, we begin to catch sight of the grandeur that awaits us.
God is at the core of the universe, overflowing with love for the human race. There can be no doubt, as God appeared as human—as one of us—receiving, accepting, and truly loving us yet standing within the inner circle of the triune God.
